Ram 3500 Expert
Ram continues to make updates throughout its heavy-duty 3500 lineup for the 2012 model year. The 2012 Ram 3500 has a few changes including a 150 lb-ft torque boost on its Cummins Turbodiesel I-6, bringing torque up to 800 lb-ft when equipped with an automatic transmission (manual transmissions keep the old 650 lb-ft).
Other minor changes in store for the 2012 Ram 3500 including a standard electronic trailer brake controller on SLT, Outdoorsman, Laramie and Laramie Longhorn models, a new black front end on ST models, and a new steering wheel across the board. Also 3500s with the Max Tow package now get a 22,750 lb maximum trailer weight rating and up to 30,000 lb Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR).
The Ram 3500 offers a ton of choice for all conceivable customers. The Ram 3500 is aggressively styled. For 2012, the heavy-duty truck is available in three cab configurations, Regular, Crew, and Mega Cab, Mega being the largest by far. The Ram 3500 is also available with two bed lengths - 6'4", and 8'0" feet, and two rear-wheel configurations - standard, or dually. Top-spec Laramie Longhorn models get a two-tone contrasting paint job and chrome accents throughout the exterior.
The Ram 3500's interior varies from bare in base ST trim, to over-the-top as the top of the line Laramie Longhorn model. The Laramie Longhorn features a Texas-themed interior brushed aluminum trim, fake barbed wire accents, and fake belt buckles on the seat-back pockets. The Ram's interior also features many storage locations like in-floor storage bins in front of the second row of seating, a large center console and a second glove box -- not to mention the available RamBox storage along the pickup bed's side rails.
The 2012 Ram 3500 is available with two transmission options, and two drivetrain configurations. The Ram 3500's sole engine is a Cummins-built turbodiesel 6.7-liter I-6 that I-6 that produces 350 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque when bolted to the standard six-speed manual transmission and 800 lb-ft of torque when bolted to an available six-speed automatic transmission. In our testing, a Laramie Longhorn dually took 9.1 seconds to accelerate from 0-60 mph un-laden, 11.0 seconds with a 3248-lb payload, and 22.1 seconds with a 12,000-lb trailer.
As expected in a modern pickup, the 2012 Ram 3500 comes loaded with safety features. All 2012 3500s come standard including front driver and passenger airbags, full-length side-curtain airbags, and front seat-mounted side airbags. 2012 3500s also get standard traction control, and electronic stability. An electronic trailer brake controller comes standard on SLT, Outdoorsman, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Power Wagon trims.
